John Alan Linthicum

John Alan Linthicum passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026 at Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born in Springfield, Ohio on February 9, 1947 to Miriam (Reynard) and William Linthicum. He grew up in a loving home in Springfield with his parents and his siblings James (Jim), Patricia (Pat), and Margaret (Maggie).

He attended North High School, graduating in 1966, then attended Ohio State University, graduating with distinction in Botany in 1969. While at Ohio State he played the sousaphone in the Ohio State Marching Band, dotting the I in Script Ohio in 1968. John spent many years in public service as an investigator for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. Later in life he was also a graduate from San Jose State, where he achieved a Master degree in Public Administration.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother James Linthicum. He leaves to honor his memory his sisters Margaret Proctor and Patricia Phillips, his son Geoffrey Charles Linthicum and his daughters Marie Claire Linthicum and Megan Kathleen Linthicum. He will also be warmly remembered by his many dear nephews and nieces Daniel (Linda) Linthicum, Thomas (Amy) Shook, Melissa Shook, Steven (Melissa) Linthicum, Joseph Shook, multiple great nephews and nieces, and special cousin and friend Debbie Reynard as well as other beloved cousins and friends.

John was warm, funny and kind-hearted. He was quick to share what he liked about people and offer words of encouragement. He was a lifelong lover of the outdoors and knew a great deal about plants and nature. He shared this love with others, including his daughters who connected with him camping and hiking together. He was also a gifted musician and singer, playing in bands and singing in choirs over the years.

According to his wishes he was cremated and his remains will be laid to rest at Ferncliff Cemetery, where his parents are buried. A celebration of life will be held at Bogey's at Rocky Lakes Golf Course, 3950 Springfield Xenia Rd, Springfield, OH 45506, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Burial at Ferncliff will occur on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
