Lester Swanson, Jr. was born to Nina (Thompson) and Lester S. Swanson, Sr. on September 28, 1939, the youngest of three children. Lester is a 1957 graduate of Springfield High School.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired after serving 26 years. After retirement, he worked in a civilian role for the U.S. Coast Guard for 15 years.  Lester and wife, Abby lived on the East coast for over 30 years.

Lester relocated to Springfield in 2021 after the passing of his wife of 55 years. He reunited with his two sisters and cousins after being away for over 60 years. Lester was a “comedian” who would always bring joy and laughter to the family during his annual visits to Springfield. He was the BBQ King and mastered the card game Euchre. He was a pretty laid-back person, who like his family, did not rush to do anything and always encouraged people to take it easy and enjoy life. While in the Air Force, he was known as “Mr. No-Sweat” which he responded to people who were always in a hurry. Lester and Abby enjoyed their lives together and had a great time cooking, dancing and enjoying home life together.

He is truly missed by his sisters Shirley and Gertrude Swanson and cousins Frank Swanson and Francetta Enoch, Cheryl Powers and Brandon Frazier (primary caregivers), and special friends Josephine Harris and Shelia Scott, Renee Anderson and Lisa Tiery who also assisted in his care.
