Melvin Hardnick, age 88, of Springfield, Ohio, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on February 7, 2026, surrounded by his wife and loving family.
Melvin was born on April 4, 1937, in Springfield, Ohio, to Elwood Hardnick and Lillian (Hamilton) Hardnick. A proud lifelong resident of Springfield, he graduated from Springfield High School and went on to live a life defined by dedication, kindness, and community.
Melvin was a hardworking and dependable man who devoted many years of service working for Parks and Recreation for the City of New Carlisle, Ohio. He took great pride in his work and believed in showing up, giving his best, and doing things the right way.
Affectionately known as “Pawpaw,” Melvin found his greatest joy in spending time with family and friends. His favorite pastime—without question—was playing cards. Any opportunity he had, Pawpaw was shuffling the deck, laughing, competing, and creating memories that will be treasured forever. Even during doctor’s visits, Melvin found ways to play cards, often playing cards with Lauren, lovingly known in the familyas “Nurse Nancy,” while wearing his blood pressure cuff and even getting Dr. Patel to join in.
He also loved playing the numbers, faithfully trying his luck in the lottery every day. Melvin took great pride in his cars and enjoyed driving them around town to play his numbers, always with a sense of purpose and style.
During the summer months, he loved gardening, and in quieter moments, he could often be found relaxing on the porch, reminiscing with loved ones, and listening to his favorite old-school music while chewing trident gum and enjoying a cold diet mountain dew.
Melvin was loved by many and truly never met a stranger, especially on his trips to the grocery store or Gills Meat Market for Granny. His warmth, quick-witted humor, and friendly spirit made everyone feel joyful and happy.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Carolyn Hardnick; his children, Melvin Hardnick Sr., Jeffrey Hardnick, Rayjean Hardnick, Chris (Karen) Hardnick, Victor Glass, his stepchildren; Cathy (Chevez) Lyons, Monique (Greg) Slaughter and Jerome Glass Jr., along with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, a large extended family, friends, card partners, and all who were blessed to know him.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his stepsons, Robert Glass and Michael Glass; his stepdaughter, Marsha Glass; two grandsons; six brothers; and four sisters.
Melvin’s life was one of love, laughter, faith, family and connection. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in every shared story, every card game, every song, and every moment of togetherness.
Rest peacefully, Pawpaw. Your legacy of love lives on.
